Spot for now, forwards for what you can see coming
Spot is not always the right tool. For predictable payments more than a few weeks out, a forward contract usually serves you better.
Spot The right call when
- The payment is due in a few days and the funds are ready.
- The amount is small enough that hedging would cost more than the risk it removes.
- You cannot forecast what is coming and have nothing concrete to lock in.
Forward Usually better when
- The payment or receipt is predictable and more than a few weeks away.
- The amount is material to your margins or budget.
- You want to know your cost on day one rather than on the day you pay.
Where spot does the work
Spot covers the day-to-day flows of an importing, exporting or investing business.
- Paying overseas suppliers Convert and settle supplier invoices on the value date you agree.
- Converting export receipts Bring foreign-currency revenue home at a known all-in rate.
- Funding offshore investments Move capital offshore with settlement instructions confirmed in writing.
- Managing ad hoc FX requirements Handle one-off payments that fall outside your hedging programme.
